At least 44 suspected Islamist militants have been killed in the
northeast of Nigeria following an encounter with government troops, the
Director of Defence Information of the Nigerian army said.Major-General
Chris Olukolade said in a statement on Monday in Abuja that the
suspected gunmen believed to be linked to Boko Haram carried out a
predawn attack on the communities, but met with stiff resistance from
the troops.
He disclosed that during the operation, several of the attackers were
captured as well as weapons and ammunition including improvised
explosive devices.
Violence in Nigeria’s northeast has been relentless in the past year
and has gained in intensity since April, when more than 200 schoolgirls
were snatched by Boko Haram rebels from Chibok.
